Aloha Dr. Scheel and Staff. It has been 15 months since I began seeing you for the Psoriasis condition on my hands and back hairline. I have wanted to write a testimonial, but have been lax in doing so. I'll write one now, in hopes other people with my symptoms will seek your professional help.
After several years of suffering with a skin condition on my hands, fingers and back hairline that caused circular red, dry patches with itching and/or burning, open cuts (felt like paper cuts) with dry thick patches that I needed to clip off. I went to a dermatologist (not Dr. Scheel) about 4 years ago. She spent 5 minutes in the room with me, said it was psoriasis, nothing could be done about it, to use steroid topically. I tried that regime for a year, without much improvement. Another couple of years went by and the condition was worsening (getting so bad I couldn't rub or scratch my grandchildren’s backs, the cuts stung, was difficult doing anything with my hands and I even wore gloves at times to hide them (and I live in Hawaii!). I had heard of Dr. Scheel so decide to try a different dermatologist. My 1st exam was 45 minutes, at which time Dr. Scheel checked all of my skin and asked questions about my health and life style, stress level. I did, in fact, have psoriasis. She suggested doing a test to see if I had allergy or intolerance to 30 different foods, because that can be a cause. After the test results came back, we met again and was told that 5 foods (refined sugar, cows milk, wheat, eggs and oats) were at high levels in my body and that they all can cause inflammation (which psoriasis is). I was told to limit these foods and coffee too, to use a topical Vitamin D lotion, swim in the ocean often (which I already did), take fish oil, probiotics, and flax seed, use the steroids when breakouts are bad and to try this regime for 5 months. If not much improvement after 5 months we'd be talking about stresses in my life (I didn't feel I had much stress). That very day I decided to just cut those 5 foods out of my new diet. Even though I've eaten mostly organic for many years, I still needed to change. I went to our Natural Food store and began my search for foods without cows milk, wheat, eggs, oats and sugar, which was not an easy task. I gave up pizza, because I still haven't found a cheese that I like and also I really don't like eating processed soy. I lost about 15 pounds in about 3 months (I'm thin anyway and 106 pounds was too thin for me). I talked to my personal physician about it and she told me I wasn't getting enough fats (cheese was my main food before) to eat macadamia nuts, because they have good fats. After a few months of adding mac nuts to my daily intake, I am now back up to 114 and feel great. Within the 1st 2 weeks of my new diet, I noticed that my psoriasis was diminishing and by the 5-month mark, it was virtually gone. Hooray! Now over a year later, occasionally my thumbs and little fingers get cracked and dry, so I use the topical steroid and vitamin D and cut back on coffee and all seems to be good. I now wear rings, don't even think about hiding my hands and can again scratch my grandchildren's backs. Life is good. Thankyou so much Dr. Scheel.

Dear Dr. Scheel –
I just received your lovely email announcement that your office is moving and expanding. Congratulations on taking this next step to expand your offerings to the health awareness and skin care of our Big Island community and thank you for being on this island.
I have been meaning to tell you what an influence you have been on my 16 year old son MP, who I brought in to see you last year. You spent nearly the full hour with him, giving him information about total health and wellness, with particular emphasis upon healthy eating and lifestyle. You gave him several handouts to read about diet as it relates to the skin. He has taken all the information to heart … and more. MP has taken the time to read up on nutrition and become an advocate for food awareness among his peers in the neighborhood and at his school in Waimea.
At age 16 his career interest appears to lie in health and nutrition, perhaps along the lines of naturopathic medicine with extra focus upon foods/nutrition. I truly believe his visit to you has profoundly influenced his life choices. You really have a special gift for wellness, and I think the path MP is now on reflects this.
THANK YOU for all you have done, and will do.

Monica:
A quick note as I put an end to my day this evening to thank you so very much for our visit today at your office. From the moment I walked into your carefully-planned and tastefully decorated offices through the final moments of account payment and appointment scheduling for February, the level of service and patient respect truly was remarkable.
Your personality and professionalism, breadth of knowledge and practical application suggestions – as well as deep listening and empathic observations – were very much appreciated.
I look forward to recommending you to local associates and friends and to a very rewarding ongoing association.
All my best.
